Six Facts about Flooding in the U.S.

Floods have always been prevalent in the United States of America. Excessive rainfall, snowmelt, and dam failures are what causes it. There have been many significant impacts that floods have brought to the country, but this article will tackle different facts about flooding in the country. Here they are:
  1. Marshlands can save $30 billion+ in flood control costs every year.
Marshlands are absorbents, stopping and slowly unloading floodwaters. An acre of marshland, soaked to foot-deep floodwater, can hold 1.25 million liters of water! That is ample enough to flood 13 regular-sized homes that are thigh-deep (2687 square feet x 2 feet) or 5,374 cubic feet!

  2. Reparations have swollen to $10 Billion per year.
From 2000-2010, severe rainfall along with land-use changes have increased floods. In spite of the billions of dollars devoted to flood control, an annual average flood loss balloons from $6 Billion to $10 Billion.

  3. Built-up lands are located in High-Risk Flood Zones all over the country.
For people living in high-risk areas, flood insurance is a must. The cost of flood insurance may vary, but it has an average of $600 per year.

  4. Embankments or Levees often fail with devastating outcomes.
Levees are embankments built to prevent the overflow of a river. An estimate of 100,000 miles of levees can be seen all over the country. Although, the condition or the exact number of those ridges are not fully documented. Two-fifths of the total population in the nation reside in counties with levees. These embankments were designed ages ago for farmland use, but now, there are residences and commercial centers built on them. By setting them back, or changing them gives the delta to naturally preserve water. It can ensure the safety of the people and provide potable drinking water and serve as a habitat for wildlife.

  5. No region is safe from flooding.
All fifty states are prone to flash floods. Flash floods can bring walls of water ten (10) to twenty (20) feet high.

  6. A car can be moved away with as little as two (2) feet of floodwater.
Floods happen for different reasons. But for whatever reason it may be, we cannot deny the changes it brings to a particular location, be it good or not. But one thing is for sure; these floods have shaped the nation, one way or another.
