Flood is a common natural disaster that can occur in any area, especially those situated in lower ground levels. This is a problematic situation for households since the flood might damage their valuables. To avoid this unfortunate situation, flood preparedness measures should be applied before, during, and after the flood.

Here are some tips to help you prepared for an upcoming flood in your area. It’s better to prepare before it’s too late.
Preparedness Before the Flood Strikes
  • Apply sealants to low lying areas in your house. You can apply it to windows, doors, and the other regions that need thorough sealing to avoid the water to flow in.
  • Make sure that the drainage of downspouts is not clogged. Clogged effluents can cause the water to flow inwards.
  • Remove all your essential documents from the basement or any low lying areas.
  • Ensure that all your electronic devices are placed on higher ground to avoid getting damaged. You can put them on top of tables. Be sure to unplug all electrical appliances.
  • Be sure to put off basement furnaces to avoid further damages.
  • If you have pets, bring them to a safer place where they can rest without the fear of getting wet from the flood.
  • Have enough stocks of food and water before the flood strikes.
  • Charge your mobile phones and rechargeable radios. The electricity might be temporarily shut down for emergency purposes.

During the Flood
  • Avoid going out if it’s not necessary. You won’t know the depth of the water unless you’re in there. There might be utility holes around, and it’s hazardous if you get trapped in it.
  • If you have a radio, listen to weather forecasts to become updated with the current situation.
  • Utilize all the resources you have until the flood subsides.

After the Flood
  • Check if any of your appliances is drenched from the flood.
  • Don’t turn on the electrical appliances yet. Give it time to dry up to avoid short circuits.
  • If you have evacuated from your home, do not turn on anything yet. Better call an electrician first to check the circuits.
  • Watch out for broken glasses and holes after the flood.
  • Check if the important documents are dry and safe
  • Have a record of all the damages caused by the flood in your home
  • Clean up with a disinfectant to avoid contamination of bacteria and viruses from the sewage that’s mixed up with the flood.

Preparing for a natural disaster is mandatory to avoid excruciating damages to your properties. To ensure that you are well-protected, make sure to have flood insurance on hand. All the damages inclusive in the policy will be covered. It’s good to know that there’s a support system to rely on when nature strikes.
