There are many reasons why people get insurance. It helps people run small businesses. If you drive a vehicle, insurance enables you to afford repairs, hospitalization costs, and legal expenses in case of accidents. It covers your healthcare costs and protects your family. In the event of deaths, insurance provides for the family.

Dogs and cats are companion animals since they keep the company and relieve the stress of their owners. Since pets are a treasured part of people's lives, why not get them insured?
History
It was in 1890 when a Swedish company, of Länsförsäkrings Alliance, wrote the very first pet insurance policy. At that time, horses and livestock were the first to be insured. In 1946, the very first pet insurance policy was issued by Dog Breeders Insurance in the U.K.

How does it work?
There is a misconception that pet insurance is like health insurance products for people. Pet insurance is more like a form of property insurance. Pet insurance policies usually cover dogs, cats, horses, and sometimes exotic animal pets. Pet insurance reimburses the owner after their pet has received care or other services. Then the owner will submit a claim to the insurance company.

There are many kinds of coverages that pet insurance companies offer. For example, here are the typical blankets for companion animals such as dogs and cats:
  • Accidents & Injuries
  • Common/Serious/Chronic Illnesses
  • Hereditary Conditions
  • Testing & Diagnostics
  • Procedures
  • Prophylaxis/Prevention

There are two kinds of insurance policies for pets. They are:
  • Non-lifetime
It covers most conditions suffered by the pet during a policy year. For example, the pet suffered from a situation and recovered, then upon renewal of the policy, the condition that has already been claimed will be excluded. If the condition still needs further treatment, then the owner will have to pay for it himself.
  • Lifetime
It covers for a pet's ongoing conditions throughout the pet's lifetime. Unlike non-lifetime, if a condition is claimed in the first year, it will not be excluded in the next coming years. Although there are limitations set for each term in every policy, it would be wise to be clear with the type of plan to consider.

Getting insurance is one way of managing risks. Insurance can cover anything that people value. Studies show pets can reduce stress in people's lives. As the stress caused by every day living increases among people in the workforce, our pets become a very invaluable part of our lives. So if you love them, get them insured.
